Reichstag
The Reichstag was built between 1884 and 1894. Until 27 February 1933, when the building was burnt down, the German parliament ( deutsche Reichstag) met in session there. The fire gave the National Socialists (who had in fact orchestrated the fire) an excuse to persecute their political opponents; this marked the end of democracy in the Weimar Republic. The building was badly damaged during the Second World War and, after it was rebuilt, the Bundestag only used it for special occasions. After the reunification of Germany in 1990, the restoration of the Reichstag was completed and the building was surmounted by a glass dome. The Reichstag has been the seat of the German parliament again since 1999.
