The relatively new false friend Handy is the normal word in German for mobile phone. Zum Glück hatte ich mein Handy dabei might therefore be translated as Fortunately I had my mobile phone with me.
The German, however, has nothing to do with the English word handy meaning convenient or useful. This adjective is best translated by the word praktisch in German. So you might translate the sentence a mobile phone comes in very handy these days by Ein Handy ist heute sehr praktisch.
