Mandatory secondary education or ESO (“Enseñanza Secundaria Obligatoria”) in Spain lasts four years, from the age of twelve to sixteen. It is divided into two two-year cycles. At the end of the second cycle (equivalent to junior year in high school), students can either go on to two years of further study if they want to go to college, or take vocational and technical courses.
