In written German, the date is given as a number followed by a full stop ( 10. Mai 2000). However, when reading the date aloud, or if writing the date out in full, ordinal numbers are used ( zehnter Mai 2000 or zehnter fünfter 2000). In abbreviated form, the day, month and year are separated by full stops ( 10.05.00). When referring to something happening on a particular date, the ordinal number is always preceded by am and has the dative ending -en ( am zehnten Mai).
